Mercury joins the Sun and Pluto in the sign of Capricorn at 6:03a PST on December 31st, 2012. This is the last major astrological event of 2012.
Mercury is the planet of the mind and quickly expedited actions. It thrives on mental stimulation and activity, so it has to be kept entertained. Otherwise, Mercury gets easily bored and will find ways to create its own entertainment, much to the dismay of others and sometimes even the natives themselves.
Capricorn is the current Sun Sign, and is very goal-oriented and ambitious. It is an earth element sign, so it is very results-driven, and strives to get things done – sometimes at any cost. Capricorn is also known as the father figure of the Zodiac, and is associated with authority figures or people of status and stature in a community or environment, especially in business.
With all of that said, Mercury in Capricorn is focused on how it can best use its intellectual facilities in achieving its goals and ambitions. It is focused on learning the ropes, gathering as much information as possible, planning and plotting its most direct course, giving direction and/or orders, and taking any specific actions that will help it in its quest for accomplishment and success.
Mercury in Capricorn also tends to be a straight shooter – it wants to get to the point, so it doesn’t like to have too many options. It wants and chooses whichever option seems to provide the most direct and productive path. It also doesn’t want to take too much time away from productivity to consider the options. After all, things have got to get done, right?
And getting things from thought to finish can be where Mercury in Capricorn shines.
When Mercury is in earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) it has a tendency to get stuck in thought or be slow in its mental process. It can think about things forever, constantly playing out every possible scenario trying to figure out how best to practically or physically implement what is going on in its head. The problem with this is that as long as it’s thinking about it, it’s not actually doing it. Actions need to be taken in order to get results.
That is where Capricorn can be the exception to the earth sign mental slow-down. Capricorn wants and needs tangible results – it needs to have a measurable outcome, something to show for its efforts. This pursuit of a tangible outcome lends itself to much-needed action. Capricorn, being the cardinal energy sign of the three earth signs, is inclined to take the initiative in order to get things accomplished. In fact, Mercury in Capricorn’s intentions are such where it – more than any other Mercury influence other than Aries – is willing to do almost anything if it helps get its desired results. It may not be the fastest at getting it done, but it will get it done in a way that ensures productivity and accomplishment of the goal. Capricorn is all about getting it done, whatever it may be.
That said, as you consciously set goals and intentions for yourself or for particular areas of your life and as you start taking actions toward those goals under Mercury in Capricorn, you may find that things actually do happen more quickly than they otherwise would. Mercury isn’t one to take its time (unless it’s in the sign of Taurus) because it thrives on mental stimulation and activity and needs to keep busy. In Capricorn, that mental and sometimes physical activity is usually focused on keeping things moving to their completions. Once the ball gets rolling, it gains momentum.
However, remember what I said about Capricorn doing whatever it needs to do in order to get things done? Well, that might play out in this 2012-2013 Mercury in Capricorn cycle…even if what needs to be done is ethically or procedurally questionable. But with Saturn as its planetary ruler, Capricorn can bring forth some pretty harsh consequences when things aren’t handled with responsibility or respect to the structures or systems in place. In fact, there may be delays or obstacles to getting things accomplished. All kinds of red tape can pop up when you’re trying to get things done without thinking the whole process through.
These delays may be frustrating. However, they will also reveal what may need to be changed or transformed about the structures and systems in place. Keep in mind – Capricorn’s ruler Saturn is currently traveling through Scorpio, the sign of transformation. There are a lot of structures that are being destroyed and replaced right now, so don’t despair if you find that you’re waiting on bureaucracy. What may be holding you back could be gone by the time Mercury moves into Aquarius on January 19th.
However, this clearing of obstacles could also be a warning – some of the safeguards in place in these structures and systems could also be removed. This means that there could be some protections and policies that protect a larger whole or the general public that are removed for the sake of “faster and easier expedition”. Keep a watchful eye for excuses for rules to be broken or eliminated by large institutions, corporations, or governments for the sake of “clearing red tape” – it may be the bureaus eliminating (or trying to eliminate) their own regulations.
This 2012-2013 Mercury in Capricorn joins the Sun and Pluto which are already traveling in the sign, and have recently conjuncted. Though Mercury does not aspect either one yet, it will conjunct Pluto on January 6th. But it will miss out on conjuncting with the Sun until both the Sun and Mercury go into Aquarius on January 19th.
So enjoy and be very observant over these next 3 weeks. I have a feeling it will prove to be very insightful.
Thank you for reading and sharing. Wishing you a very happy and safe 2013!
