Venus conjuncts Mars in the sign of Aries at 9:58p PDT this evening, Saturday, April 06, 2013.

When Venus conjuncts Mars, it is an opportunity to see how our actions affect our partners.  It is also an opportunity to assess how the actions of our partners affect us.

Actions determine the course of a relationship.  Therefore, the ones who take the actions determine the direction and set the course.  Ideally in relationships, choices are made together for actions taken together and/or separately.  But we must always remember that even within partnership, we are talking about two individuals.  When the individuals in a partnerships act without consideration for the other, sometimes things change….or better and/or worse.

Mars is the ruling planet of AriesMars and Aries are considered the masculine energies of the zodiac, and represent initiative and action.

Venus is the ruling planet of Aries’ opposite sign, Libra.  Libra is an air sign, and tends to be objective and detached in its assessment of one-on-one relationships and partnerships.  Therefore, as the ruler of the sign, Venus lends itself to “we” thinking, and is focused on balance, equality, fairness, and justice.

Venus is considered a feminine energy because Libra is opposite Aries, therefore Venus is considered to be the “feminine” counterpart of Mars.   Tradition places Venus in the partner or support role to Mars’ masculine energy, and in male-dominated cultures this puts Venus (women) into a subservient role.

However, by recognizing that Libra is an emotionally detached air sign, a new perspective of the (mistaken) traditional idea emerges.  Instead of emotion-based partnership that can waver depending on mood, we can actually recognize that Venus and Libra actually represent objectivity, equality, balance, and truth.  Therefore, Venus and Libra actually aren’t so much about support and subservience, but rather, balance and equality.  Partnership takes two people, and one can only be as strong as the other for the partnership to work.

It is through Venus and Libra that we understand the power of partnerships and one-on-one relationships of all kinds.  Our partners reflect us back to ourselves, and we also reflect our partners.  That is why last week’s Full Moon was so profound.  With the Light of the Aries Sun having its truth through the filter of its Libra Full Moon counterpart, we got to see who we are through our choice of partner(s) and we learn about our partners through their choosing us.  This Venus-Mars conjunction continues that theme.

Venus in Aries, as discussed in previous blog posts, takes on a “what’s in ‘we’ for ‘me’” kind of attitude.  It assesses an individual’s personal benefit within a partnership.  It gives you a chance to see if you are getting what you want and/or need in your partnerships of all kinds.

Mars in Aries goes after what it wants – whatever it is passionate about, whatever it is inspired by.  Mars takes action to mark its territory.  It’s what may have you saying “I got it first” or “I got here first”.

That said, your actions (or lack of actions) you take in your relationships really do speak louder than your words, revealing what you really want and how you really feel in those relationships.  It also acknowledges that your desires and feelings aren’t always driven by or determined by your partner(s).  Sometimes, they are products of who you yourself are as an individual and you are trying to make them compatible with your partner’s desires and feelings.  Even if you think or say that you want something, your actions will always make the real truth known.

For example:

  • If you have been wanting to ask someone out but you’ve held back, afraid they may say ‘no’, you may never find out that they’ve been waiting on you to make the first move and do exactly what you’ve been too afraid to do.
  • If you tell your partner that you want to buy a home with or for them, yet you continue to spend money on frivolous things instead of saving for the down payment, they may begin to believe that you aren’t serious about buying the home.
  • If you tell your partner that you want to take them out for a special evening, yet continue to cancel or reschedule those evening plans due to work or to spend time with others, they may begin to believe that you don’t consider them important enough to make the time for them, or for your relationship.
  • If you have been with your partner for a while but they still haven’t met your family or friends, your partner may begin to wonder if you are hiding them or why you are hiding the rest of your life from them.

The above could also be your partner’s actions toward you.

Either way, notice that actions, taken or not, lead to more actions, or to questions or assumptions.  And sometimes, those questions and assumptions can lead to doubts and fears that may destroy a partnership or conversations that may begin or strengthen one.  Under the influence of this Aries Venus-Mars conjunction, the questions that come up are more likely to be along the lines of:

  • Is this how I want to be treated?  Am I being treated with fairness and respect?
  • Is the relationship good for me?  Is it favorable?
  • Is my partner an affirmative or encouraging presence in my life?
  • Do they blame me for their lack of commitment to the relationship?
  • Am I being someone or doing something that is upsetting to my partner and causing them to withdraw?  Have I asked them what that might be, or am I making assumptions to explain their withdrawal or absence?

There’s a lot to consider as Venus conjuncts Mars this evening in Aries.  Yet there’s also a lot to act upon (or not act upon) once you’ve asked and answered the questions.  Take note, and possibly take action…in your best interests.
