While Ceres in Capricorn was moving in retrograde motion, many of us experienced feedback and some of us experienced pushback when it came to exercising our personal lifestyle values in the context of societal institutions and structures. Now with Ceres in Capricorn’s eminent return to direct motion at 12:16p PDT on Monday, 14th September 2015, this recent period of receiving values feedback is over. The feedback delivered to date has some people changing their value stances, while others have become ever more stubborn in their determination to preserve their “traditional” values.

Capricorn is the cardinal earth sign of the Zodiac. Ruled by Saturn, it is goal-oriented, results-driven, and absolutely determined to succeed in whatever it puts its energy into. It lives for rewards –trophies, awards, bonus checks, etc. Anything tangible or experiential to prove its success and/or ‘superior’ status is motive and objective. As cardinal earth, it is also the initiative energy of the earth signs – once you have a goal or desired result or objective (Capricorn), you can figure out which resources and values you need in order to accomplish that goal (Taurus) and create a system or practice based on the resources and values you have adopted and/or acquired (Virgo).

Ceres is the ruler of Taurus. It is the “earth mother” – the maternal presence responsible for providing you with all you materially and physically need in order to survive and thrive in life. Ceres reveals how and how much you value your lifestyle and the resources that sustain it comfortably. Ceres gives insights into how your values may affect your ability to receive or maintain your material and physical lifestyle resources (food, shelter, money, physical affection, sex, etc.). The sign and house placement of Ceres in your astrology chart is one of the determinants of your personal lifestyle “comfort zone”.

In the sign of Capricorn, Ceres is helping you define and make clear your values-based intentions and objectives. Yet it also helps define and clarify the values of various societies/cultures and societal institutions. In many of parts of the world right now, societal structures and institutions are being challenged to shift and change – to evolve. As result, you may find your own personal lifestyle foundation being challenged or tested by those changes. If the changes occurring in your community or society are not in alignment with your personal lifestyle values, you are likely feeling called to stand up and stand your ground to preserve “the way things have always been” or what you believe is “the way things should be”.

As you take you stand, consider that you may be adamantly set against the changes not necessarily because they are factually “right” or “wrong”, but simply because they make you feel uncomfortable because they are different from what you’ve known or are familiar with. These differences may challenge your long-held personal beliefs and/or societal beliefs. They may challenge your education. They may challenge your traditions. They may challenge your personal or professional goals. They may challenge the very foundation of how and why you live your life.

During Ceres Retrograde, both the advocates for and resistors to change have been making their positions in various matters known and clear with each side doing their best to be clear about what is “right” or “wrong” from their point of view. It’s been made pretty clear that there is now a battle between “tradition” and “progression” at hand. Once moving in direct motion, Ceres in Capricorn will be ready to act upon the feedback it has received. This call to action will be fueled by two factors:

  • The one transit Ceres makes (within 3° orb) at the time of its direction change – a quincunx/inconjunct aspect to Mars in Leo. This reveals the indirect effects of individual acts of creative self-expression upon long-held societal and institutional values…and vise-versa.
  • This is occurring under a Virgo 8 Sun – revealing and/or implementing plans and systems in efforts to wield power and influence. These acts aren’t meant to resolve issues – they are meant to manipulate and vie for control.

Under these two influences, long-held societal and/or institutional values are the points of contention, and their current state of existence is indirectly related to the behavior being displayed and justified by individuals. Both individuals and institutions are being driven into action by a need to justify their self-expression and/or by a need to expose another’s “true values” to the light of day. Either way, it’s not glorious behavior, and may reveal a cause’s weaknesses more than its strengths.

Ceres will be in Capricorn until 28th October, making sure that there will be plenty of stubborn resistance to change over the next few weeks, for better and worse. Though there may be a few moments of brilliance, it’s more probable that whatever comes to light through people’s actions in the next few weeks isn’t going to pretty. There may be some ugly revelations coming, both on the collective level and on the personal level 15th-21st September, especially on Friday 18th September when the Virgo 8 Sun makes exact trine aspect with Capricorn Ceres direct at 1:57a PDT. These revelations may make it difficult for some people to continuing justifying their value-based positions and lifestyles.

I’m sure I’ll be discussing more about Ceres in Capricorn over the next few weeks. In the meantime, take your position, make your stand, and hold your ground as your personal and societal lifestyle foundations are being tested.
