We experience the first New Moon phase of 2017 today, Friday 27th January 2017 at 4:07p PST at 8.25° Aquarius (for some “far east” nations, this will happen in the morning hours of 28th January 2017). This 2017 Aquarius New Moon also marks the beginning of the lunar calendar, and for many lunar-based cultures, this marks the commencement of the Year of the Fire Rooster (or Cockerel).
The sign of Aquarius is a fixed air sign, which represents a few things:
- This represents the heart of the winter season.
- This represents intellectual strength and resilience, especially through communication. In other words, people are thinking now, and coming together around discoveries and ideas.
- This represents community pooling its individual resources, talents, and abilities to get through the winter cold.
- This represents unique individual contributions to the greater whole of humanity.
The sign of the Rooster in Chinese Zodiac represents reliability, punctuality, forthrightness, and keeping up appearances. This particular year will be a Fire Rooster year, and the fire element adds confidence, assertiveness, and leadership through initiative action.
This 2017 Aquarius New Moon ushers in a growing call for acknowledgment of the human voice…but not in the way some expect. People are making their voices heard on humanitarian issues and causes. They are paying attention to their individual and collective human rights and their individual and collective freedom of expression. They are looking at their ability to communicate freely in a public manner, and they are examining their ability to come together with a common reason or purpose.
This is happening under an 11 universal month, numerologically speaking, which is very auspicious for Aquarian energy since 11 energy is very similar to Aquarius – a collective of assertive and usually independent individuals coming together as peers to take initiative on matters of both individual and collective importance to them.
The one quirk in this is that Aquarius’ ruling planet, Uranus, is continuing its travels in the sign of Aries. Aries is cardinal fire energy – initiative, independent, individual, assertive or aggressive, impulsive, and combative. Uranus reveals that individuals may come together in collaboration and/or community to aggressively push for shared interests and common goals. This is combustible energy. Add to the mix that Mars – the planet of action – enters its home sign of Aries about 5.5 hours after the Moon’s maximum new phase, and that combustible energy gets its match. Though Mars is about 21° behind Uranus, the fact that the two planets are in the same sign reveals a much more hostile tone that is likely to be acted upon. What may start out as deliberate yet peaceful actions to express interests and concerns may not be so peaceful after these next few hours. That’s the bad news about this 2017 Aquarius New Moon – this could prove to be an explosive time.
Yet on the positive side of matters, we may see more people willing to stand for their personal goals and values, and they are willing to come together to pursue their common interests. Even if they may not agree on everything, they agree on enough where progress can be made with a multitude of voices.
You may also notice an increase of mass communication establishments and outlets being much more focused and determined to fulfill their objectives in bringing truth to power through traditional broadcasting methods as well as through social media technologies. The challenge is that if either side of the conversation is not aligning their point of view(s) with factual truth, there could be a problem in holding the other side accountable. It’s important to make sure your integrity is intact before pointing fingers at others. Otherwise, under this Aquarius 11 New Moon and Uranus in Aries, retribution may be swift and very public.
In other words, this will not be a warm and fuzzy New Moon cycle. Far from it. Like all New Moon phases, this 2017 Aquarius New Moon will still inspire new beginnings, but with an unusually assertive edge. This Rooster has things to say, and it’s not going to be quiet about them. It’s going to speak up loudly, proudly, and possibly with fireworks.
There’s quite a few transits in effect at the moment the 2017 Aquarius New Moon is at maximum phase. Let’s take a look at the complexities in play on this day:
- Libra Jupiter sextile Sagittarius Saturn – A growing awareness of the need for balance, equality, fairness, and/or justice supports an authoritative call to seek and align with factual truth in all its forms.
- Libra Jupiter quincunx (Pisces Chiron conjunct Venus) – A call to bring balance, equality, fairness to one-on-one relationships of all kinds indirectly affects the ability to heal and restore peaceful balance to those relationships
- Libra Jupiter opposite Aries Uranus – An increase in relational imbalances, inequalities, and injustices rallies the masses. Individuals comes together as a community to rally for a common intention or to act in rebellion against a common threat or challenge.
- Scorpio Black Moon Lilith quincunx Aries Ceres – An intense desire for emotional-spiritual depth and substance doesn’t make an assertive push of personal values such a great course of action.
- Sagittarius Saturn square (Pisces Chiron conjunct Venus) – Facts challenge ideals, and holding each other accountable for factual truths may disturb the peace and re-open long-running emotional and/or spiritual wounds in relationships.
- Sagittarius Juno square Pisces Mars – A commitment to factual truth may lead to delays, obstacles, or other challenges to ideal-based actions, especially impulsive acts.
- Capricorn Mercury conjunct Pluto – There is an intellectual-communicative focus on how power is being wielded to achieve goals and fulfill objectives to either empower or destroy institutions.
- (Aquarius 11 Sun conjunct Moon) semi-sextile Pisces Neptune – New beginnings may lead to new ideas on how to advance your emotional and/or visionary ideals.
- Pisces Chiron semi-sextile Aries Uranus – The re-opening of both personal and collective emotional-spiritual wounds may lead to individuals coming together to take action for a common goal of rebellion and/or protest.
