The Sagittarius New Moon graces us with its optimistic and expansive presence late this evening – at 10:30p PST on Sunday, 17th December 2017 (26.55°). This means the New Moon will be happening on Sunday the 17th for about half of North America and many Pacific regions, and will be occurring on Monday the 18th for the rest of the world.
New Moons are astrological conjunctions between the Sun and the Moon which represent new beginnings and fresh starts. New Moons bring initiative energy to matters – there’s often a sense that something is about to begin or get started under the influence of a New Moon. Maybe it’s a new course of direction. Maybe it’s a new creative project.
In this case, the Sun and the Moon meet in the sign of Sagittarius. Sagittarius brings the jolly, optimistic, larger-than-life energies of growth and expansion, and it is often associated with increased knowledge and wisdom as result of its first-hand experiences. After all, in order to know the real truth, you’ve got to go there and experience things for yourself. Sagittarius does not hesitate to do just that.
In this 2017 case, we have the energy of the Sagittarius 4 Sun asking each and all of us to get up out of our armchairs – out of our comfort zones – to prove we can really do what we say we can do. The Moon reveals our emotional eagerness or resistance to putting its skills on display, but it may also give us the emotional support and encouragement to finally take action.
This is where many of us are right now. We are individually and collectively being called upon to actually live our lives! We’re being asked to step out of our comfort zones and into the unfamiliar and uncomfortable in order grow and expand our awareness, knowledge, and understanding of factual truth. We’re being challenged to place the wisdom we already have on full display for everyone around us to see and learn from, and we’re being asked to embrace new knowledge and gain new kernels of wisdom which can only come to us when we take courageous action in our lives. It’s not just enough to be able to be or do something these days – now, you’ve got to be able to keep an open mind and heart to grow beyond who you are and what you know.
Though this 2017 Sagittarius New Moon is a mighty power in itself, it also has some very powerful friends this time around.
One of the most prominent friends is the Galactic Center. It is literally the astronomical center of our galaxy, the Milky Way Galaxy, positioned at 26.85°-27.05° Sagittarius. The Galactic Center is metaphysically and spiritually believed to be an exchange point for energy and information from other galaxies, giving us access to knowledge and wisdom from beyond our known world(s). Because it is also an astronomical black hole, I like to think of it as “the rabbit hole”, like in Alice of Wonderland.
The fact that the 2017 Sagittarius New Moon conjunction is also conjunct the Galactic Center gives us a sense that we are connecting with our greater destinies – as individuals and as a collective whole of humanity. Many of us feel we are connecting with something greater than all of us right now – that we are being pulled into a next phase of our human experience.
Yet the Sun, Moon, and Galactic Center are not the only attendees of this party.
This Sun + Moon + GC trifecta of energies is also within 3° conjunction orb with Saturn in Sagittarius, which is at 29.77° at the time of the New Moon’s maximum phase. Saturn is about to move into its home sign of Capricorn late on Tuesday evening PST… but that’s in a couple of days. In the meantime, Saturn is still bringing the focus and discipline- it is still calling for us to be aligned with our factual and Divine inner truths. And through that call to alignment, we each have an opportunity and a responsibility to make sure we are really to jump into that rabbit hole without hesitation.
This is where Saturn acts as “the gatekeeper” to the Galactic Center’s “rabbit hole”. Just when many of us thought we had free access to the ride, Saturn is making sure we have our seat belts securely fastened and our hands inside the car – and our hearts and minds aligned with our Divine inner truths as well as factual truth – before this rollercoaster ride into uncharted territory earnestly begins through the vehicle that is the 2017 Sagittarius New Moon.
And that’s not all.
In fact, in true New Moon fashion, we’re just getting started.
That’s because the Sun + Moon + GC + Saturn stellium forms an opposition to White Moon Selene, giving us hope we haven’t had in a very long time. There’s a feeling that even though things may still seem dark, we may be finally making a turn toward Light. It feels like it’s just a matter of time, and we must keep moving forward if we are going to get there. Yet both ends of this opposition are also squared by Chiron in Pisces to form a T-Square configuration, which challenges us to not only acknowledge the emotional-spiritual wounds we have been carrying – it also calls for us to begin healing those wounds. The hope isn’t just hope for the sake of hope – it is hope for the sake of healing the pain we’ve been feeling for a very long time. The wounds are finally fully exposed, enabling each and all of us to be able to recognize what exactly is needed to bring healing to our individual and collective hearts once and for all.
Of course, all of this is easier said than done.
There are a few more transits to deal with under the influence of this 2017 Sagittarius New Moon.
The most significant transit may be Scorpio Jupiter is conjunct Vesta (14-16°), increasing the intensity of the passion we have for getting to the bottom of the matters of our lives right now. There is no desire for secrets – we want it all out in the open because it’s only when everything is brought out into the light that we can see it and trust it. This push to bring everything out into the open is what is making things very difficult for those of us who prefer to keep things private, especially the deepest, darkest things about ourselves or our circumstances.
Scorpio Jupiter conjunct Vesta is also trine Pisces Neptune Retrograde (18-19°), bringing awareness of people’s hopes and dreams to the fore, bringing growing awareness of the choices at hand. Again, this isn’t the time and place for keeping secrets or trying to hide truths. Yet it is also a time in which people’s ideals (and possibly delusions) are coming to light. Allowing hopes and dreams to be revealed is good in many ways in that the more people who know, the more people there are who may be able to assist in making your dreams come true. Yet it can also be challenging in that there may be some who take advantage of your idealism, promising you the Moon only to end up pushing you onto cold, hard ground. Thanks to the trine aspect, we can trust that whatever is exposed during this time will be done so in the best and Highest interests of all involved and affected. If you feel you are being treated wrongly or unjustly, I hate to break it to you, but you may be on the wrong side of factual truth at this moment in time. It may be time to face some difficult factual truths about the current circumstances.
But Jupiter + Vesta conjunction is also square to the Nodal Axis (15-18°), forming a Nodal T-Square configuration. This means that the things coming to Light are helping us recognize where we may be stuck in our past and/or resistant to the future. This is the epicenter of the call to grow beyond our usual confines and experience life outside our norms in order to expand and deepen our individual and collective world view. Those who can move outside their comfort zones may realize there is so much more to embrace in the world than they ever imagined, while those who cannot give up their comfort zones may find themselves experiencing the collapse and/or destruction of their safe havens.
Ceres in in Leo and is conjunct the Moon’s North Node (15-18°) at the time of the New Moon’s max phase, reminding us to value ourselves and our unique self-expression if we’re going to move forward toward the greatest fulfillment of our collective and individual destinies. Yet Leo Ceres conjunct North Node is also quincunx Capricorn Pluto, Pluto reveals just how much our societal institutions are not in alignment with our value of individual self-expression. In fact, many of us may be recognizing that our individuality is being squashed and our personal power is being compromised. This may be just what is needed to encourage many of us to stand up for ourselves and our truths – a call to make ourselves seen and heard through creative and original means.
Aries Uranus Retrograde is conjunct Pallas Athena (24-25°) at the time of the New Moon’s max phase. This is a fascinating transit revealing that the patterns of response from various communities (your own or others) have begun to be predictable. This is a blessing for those trying to challenge or defeat certain communities… and makes it a potential curse for those who are in those communities taking the same approach again and again. If you and your community have been trying the same thing over and over again expecting a different result, you may want to stop the insanity and figure out a new strategy. In fact, you – as an individual – may need to step up and step out on your own to be a trailblazer. YOU may need to be the one who steps out on behalf of yourself and your community to make a stand for what is most important to you and to confront those who challenge it.
Speaking of confrontation, Mars in Scorpio is in sextile aspect to Black Moon Lilith in Capricorn (4-5°) at the time of the New Moon’s max phase. This reveals a power play in which one side takes action while another side defends its soul’s deepest (and likely darkest) desires. Mars in Scorpio can be competitive and combative, especially when it feels powerless or that its power is being challenged or threatened in some way. It will go all-or-nothing to stop its challengers or dissenters. Mars’ fierce battle instincts support Lilith in Capricorn’s discipline and focus on her goals and ambitions – she what she wants and will go to any lengths to get it. Her eyes are on the prize. These two energies blend to create a force to be reckoned with. If you’re in a fight, you would be wise not to underestimate the power and influence of your opponent, who may be perfectly content to burn the whole thing down rather than allow you to take control.
The numerological 3 universal day energy will still be in effect in about half of North America and the Pacific, so those regions will experience this New Moon energy as a time to recognize opportunities for growth and expansion. It would be wise to listen and learn as the answers you’re seeking are already available to you, hiding in plain sight.
Yet the majority of the world will experience this 2017 Sagittarius New Moon under the influence of a 22 universal day – a day of connected community in which friends and neighbors strengthen their relationships in order to face the world as a solid and unified front. Pay attention to the alliances made today in your own personal life, in the community around you, and in the world around you. They may prove to be valuable connections as matters progress.
After all, if you’re going to go down the rabbit hole, why go it alone when you can go together? You’ll still have a unique and individual experience. Yet this 2017 Sagittarius New Moon reminds us that it’s a big Universe, and as much as we may like to think we can go it alone, we never truly accomplish anything alone. In this case, teamwork makes the dream work… as long as that team is truly in alignment with and supportive of your dream.
As you embark on your adventure, remember – stay true to yourself, and you’ll never be lost.
And with that, take your ride into “the rabbit hole”. It’s time.
Thank you for reading and sharing Signs and Numbers. Until next post…
