The 2021 Virgo New Moon reaches its maximum phase at 5:52p PDT on Monday 6th September 2021 (14.74°). This particular New Moon phase ushers in a call for the practical application of our lifestyle values and beliefs. In some ways, it’s a time to begin practicing what we’ve been preaching. In other ways, it may prove to us that our long-held values, beliefs, and societal standards for success may now need to evolve and change.
Virgo is mutable earth energy. This sign can provide a rather mundane, grounding energy, but it’s also changeable and adaptable. Think thick clay or mud – it has some form, yet it’s pliable and can be molded into whatever form it needs to be shaped into for it to serve or fulfill its purpose. It also allows for slow-moving changes that most people can more easily align with, providing enough structure for people to feel supported in making whatever changes they need to make.
Virgo can also be very detail-oriented. Traditionally ruled by Mercury, it has an intellectual side to it, thinking things through in order to find solutions to problems, fix what’s perceived to be broken, and to heal what is wounded… healing being the territory of Virgo’s contemporary ruler, Chiron. Virgo understands that in order to have successful results, there needs to be a plan, or at least a system or process in place in order to give some sort of framework for the work being done and changes being made – something to keep things aligned with their intended purpose, on track toward the objective or goal for the effort being made.
That said, there needs to be a clearly-defined purpose for the actions being taken and the effort being applied. This need for purpose is where this 2021 Virgo New Moon takes a bit of a turn – old motivations and purposes are being exposed with the intention of phasing them out and clearing them out, meaning new and healthier motivations must now emerge.
Yet the old, now toxic, motivations are still very much if not too much in place due to the determination of some people to keep the past in place, to “return back to normal” and/or maintain the same social and societal goals that have been in place for years, if not decades, centuries, and maybe even a couple millennia. Despite major shifts occurring in the practical reality of everyday life for most if not all people around the world right now, some still continue their determined and possibly delusional efforts to return to the outdated status quo or maintain what’s left of it.
Much of the resistance to new motivations is due to the fact that as much as we humans say we like change or want change, we’re actually resistant to it, especially if it affects us directly. Most of us are uncomfortable with the idea that to get what we say we want, we ourselves are the ones who must change. Instead, what most people really want when we say we want change is to have any obstacles to the objectives or outcomes we want removed. We often get tripped up by the belief that we should only have to ask for the changes we want insistently and consistently – that our intellect and communication to others should be enough, and we should not have to put forth any practical effort toward the outcome. We tend to idealize passivity, which is not to be confused with patience as passivity is a conscious choice to not choose practical action of any kind.
However, in both the processes of manifestation and realization, initiative practical action is the key to progress. Without action, there cannot be any problems solved; there cannot be any healing; there can not be any moving on. Though mutable signs are usually indicators of changes being needed and/or changes coming on the horizon, under the influence of this 2021 Virgo New Moon, this is a call to willingly initiate change in your life and in your personal day-to-day practices and environments.
Numerologically speaking, in the Americas and Caribbean regions, this New Moon is occurring on a 2 Universal Day of emotion-driven connection and partnership. In the rest of the world, it is occurring on a 3 Universal Day of learning, growth, and expansion. Both of these energies are occurring under a double 5 energy umbrella of the 5 Universal Month and the 5 Universal Year. Five energy represents change and the call for adaptability that comes with it. This 2021 Virgo New Moon brings a new experience of reality for many – a reality which many people will have never experienced directly or in such close proximity, until now.
For those of us living under the 2 Universal Day energy, this 2021 Virgo New Moon will be a time in which our 1-on-1 interactions of all kinds will be the gateways to our journey to clarity of motivation and purpose. What we discuss and debate with one another will serve as mirrors or stark contrasts of our own behaviors, awakening us to our own individual paths of healing and progressing forward. However, be careful to avoid continuous dialogue as a distraction from or avoidance of change-accepting action.
For those of us living under the 3 Universal Day energy, this 2021 Virgo New Moon will provide opportunities for learning, growth, and expansion. What we intellectually learn from each other and what experientially learn through first-hand experience will be the gateways to our journey to clarity of motivation and purpose. Those of us experiencing this New Moon phase under this energy are more likely to be practicing some degree of change-accepting action already, rather than still solely debating the intellectual semantics in order to delay the inevitable (as “change is the only constant in life”).
Now, “change-accepting action” doesn’t necessarily mean you are simply accepting the changes happening around you. It means you’re consciously accepting that these changes are occurring and you’re taking practical real-world action(s) in order to navigate the changes in ways which support your continued forward motion into your personal self-expression, growth, and development journey. It means you’re able to look at these changes for what they’re trying to help you see and understand about how you’re choosing to be and live, and for what they’re trying to get you to do which is to assist yourself and the rest of human kind in your evolution.
The more we begin to see how we are individually and collectively functioning in the world at this time, the more we (as individuals, community, society, or world) recognize that our fundamental lifestyle values must evolve in order for we as beings to evolve. We simply can no longer live by the same values we once did – they have become toxic to us. Our own first-hand experiences are now proving to us that we must evolve, and evolve quickly through action. With so many transformative events happening for the first time, and so many first-time events repeating or continuing, there’s a growing understanding that we aren’t going back to the way things were, and we need to figure out how to navigate the reality of the changing world we’re living in now, both intellectually and physically.
Yet too many people continue to willingly embrace their ideals and/or fantastic visions as their reality – either what they perceive their reality actually is (intellectual delusion), or what they’re desperate for their reality to be (emotional attachment). It’s almost as if they believe that if they live exclusively by their ideal, they can make the reality of the changing world go away. This alternate reality they’ve created for themselves is a defense mechanism – a way to avoid having to deal with learning to navigate something new or different and/or a way to avoid having to do the work of figuring out how to move on from the past to make innovative progress and/or a way of avoiding initiative practical action.
As this call for change-accepting action strengthens, it’s our idealism and desire to escape the inevitable realities of our world now that’s at the root of most difficulties during this 2021 Virgo New Moon. Though idealism can be useful at times, in the case of the 2021 Virgo New Moon, it’s likely to show up as an unhealthy circumvention of what is, holding the collective whole back as 1) individual(s) clinging to these ideals won’t move forward with others looking to make change and progress, and 2) individuals unwilling to accept the inevitability of change choose to remain in a state of fantastic inspiration rather than take the real-world steps to bring our fantasies into reality.
With all of that noted, let’s take a closer look at the astrological transits in play (within 3° orb) as the 2021 Virgo New Moon reaches its maximum phase to better understand how these energies are impacting us during this one-week period.
(Virgo Sun conjunct Moon) trine Taurus Uranus Retrograde (14°) – Our fundamental lifestyle and resource conditions are evolving at an exponential rate, encouraging us to assess how we’re really functioning in the world on an everyday basis, and empowering us to make necessary and healing change to the ways we go about doing things in the day-to-day of our lives. This is a call to adopt healthier, more efficient and effective values as the foundations of our daily lives.
T-SQUARE: (Libra Vesta conjunct Venus) square Capricorn Pluto Retrograde square Aries Eris (23-25°) – The pivot of this t-square configuration is all about the major transformation of society that is underway. Transformation isn’t just change – it is the death of one way of being in order for a new way of being to emerge. Outdated societal structures are being forced out, and even if they seem to be strengthening, the reality is that this is their last push for relevancy and the retention of the power they once had. The old ways and the standards and measures related to them are dying. That said, the more individuals exchange information and ideas with other individuals in true communication, the more individual begin to get in touch with their own feelings about these changes. The more their self-identities are attached to the old standards and measures for societal achievement and success, the more frustrated if not angry people are becoming. They have a choice in how they’re choosing to resist or adapt to the inevitable as change is the only constant in our lives and in the Universe.
(Pisces Pallas Athena Retrograde conjunct Neptune Retrograde) opposite Virgo Mars (21-24°) – Idealism and delusion are often aversions from pragmatic, real-world action… and sometimes even attempted substitutes for doing the actual work! Yet there’s no escaping the need for action to be taken if a dream or vision is to be brought into manifestation. Patterns of delusion and staunch idealism are likely to be brought to light now, calling for the façades to be pulled back and the realities to be acknowledged, addressed, and progressed.
Gemini North Node conjunct Black Moon Lilith opposite Sagittarius South Node (5°) – The lessons to be learned now are of a shadow nature, challenging us to see the parts of ourselves we often keep hidden (or think we’re keeping hidden) from others. Especially for those who believe they know everything and are “doing the right thing”, there may be difficult questions coming from newer and/or younger minds who may be seeing things from a very different perspective. Keep an open mind and allow yourself to see, hear, and understand what others are trying to tell you now.
GRAND TRINE: Libra Mercury trine Aquarius Saturn Retrograde trine Gemini Ceres (7-10°) – Intellectual exchanges with other individuals help focus energies and assists in shaping new thoughts and ideas. Pay attention to what you learn and what others learn from you – there is value in these exchanges, now and in the future.
Virgo Mars trine Capricorn Pluto Retrograde (24°) – Pragmatic action is the only effective response to the way power is being wielded – for better of worse – within our societal institutions and structures right now. This is not a time for intellectual musing, but rather, taking what we’ve learned and putting it into tangible, experiential form. Action must be taken now.
(Libra Vesta conjunct Venus) trine Aquarius Jupiter Retrograde (23-25°) – Dedication to peaceful partnerships empowers the growing awareness of the power of collaboration and the expanding awakening of individual contributions to teams, collaborative efforts, and collective growth. Your 1-on-1 connections could turn into opportunities for your own personal growth, especially if you allow yourself to be recognized for your positive attributes.
Aquarius Jupiter Retrograde sextile Aries Eris Retrograde (24°) – Individuals are becoming increasingly aware of other individuals who have common concerns, feelings, and goals. People are also beginning to awaken to and understand why “there is power in numbers.”
