Mars is the action and aggression planet, a.k.a. the planet of war. Pluto is the transformation planet, a.k.a. the great destructor. Together, these two planets can create a lot of combustion.
Yet as of 3:51p PDT today, July 27th, these two planets are exactly opposite each other at 9 degrees in their respective signs – Mars currently in Cancer and Pluto Retrograde currently in Capricorn. Oppositions are usually balancing energies, but in this case and in these signs, this could be the sign of a pretty intense battle.
Pluto in Capricorn represents the destruction or transformation of standards, systems, and structures that help us define success and public or professional status among cultures and nations, and throughout the world. Under this influence, we are collectively being asked to allow the old and outdated systems to die, and to allow new standards and systems to emerge to create the new material-financial-physical structures for success in our cultures, societies, and world.
In retrograde motion, the impact of Pluto in Capricorn’s changes draws the focus inward on a more personal level. You may find that you are becoming increasingly aware of how the changes in the world are beginning to affect you on a very personal level or in a very personal way, and the effects are likely showing through your emotions and how you are able to manage them (or not) at this time.
Mars in Cancer indicates that actions are being (or will be) taken to protect and nurture what is loved and cared for. The fire of Mars is driven by emotions in this case, which means that if you or enough people are emotionally invested in something, you will take action to care for it and/or protect it. Knowing how aggressive Mars can be, this may even reveal that Mars in Cancer is willing to fight for what it feels needs to be protected, defended, or cared for.
The fight is what is important during this Mars-Pluto opposition. You’ve got a fire planet (Mars) in a water sign (Cancer), and a water planet (Pluto) in an earth sign (Capricorn). As the material-physical-financial structures shift, the shifts affect your collective and individual emotional well-being. Concerns may arise as to whether or not you can continue to provide for or support yourselves. You may wonder how we are going to care for others, or you may take more notice to where and/or how resources are being distributed, and some of these concerns may awaken some very deep emotional energies. Once those emotions are awakened, it is they who drive your actions and our collective actions.
On a collective level, do we fight? And if a group of us fights, are we fighting for change, or are we fighting for the status quo?
One a personal level, the question is the same – do you fight for change for yourself and your loved ones’, or do you fight to resist change and defend your status quo?
One thing to keep in mind – Pluto is patient and very strong. It moves much more slowly in orbit than Mars, therefore it has more time in its current sign to do its work. It is likely that any proposed changes are going to happen whether you want them to or not in some way, so fighting them may be an exercise in futility.
But that’s not to say that fighting wouldn’t have a purpose or role. With Pluto in Capricorn, in most cases, the changes that are happening (or trying to happen) are going to happen eventually. There is no way to avoid them. And the thing about this Mars-Pluto Retrograde opposition is that you may realize that you can no longer fight or avoid the changes that are happening or coming. You can’t fight the changes themselves, but you can take actions to adjust and adapt to them or to adjust or change the changes themselves. This way, you can balance the changes to your world with changes in your actions/behaviors.
If there are changes coming that are not in your best interests the way they are designed or intended at the onset, you can fight for adjustments or redesign efforts so that the changes align with your best and most heartfelt interests. But Mars won’t be in Cancer very long, so the emotional spark that starts this fire of fight probably won’t last very long in its own right. It may evolve into something else, but it probably won’t only be about nurturing and caring for yourself or your family if you initiate a battle under this intention.
That said, it’s important for you to know and understand what you’re fighting for and why:
Are you fighting for changes that improve the quality of your life and the lives of your loved ones, or are you fighting out of fear of changes to your status quo?
Recognize which changes actually benefit you and which ones don’t. Also identify which changes are actually happening or going to happen, in contrast to the ones are only theoretical. This will help you figure out which things are worth fighting for and whether or not you fight for them or against them if you fight them at all.
Please note that this feisty Mars-Pluto opposition is also part of the “Star” configuration coming on July 29th. This only reinforces the idea that this “fortunate” configuration may be for the best in the long run, things will probably seem worse before they get better.
How can you care for, nurture, and protect your loved ones in this time of profound change? That is the question to ask yourself as we move forward through this opposition of Mars in Cancer and Pluto Retrograde in Capricorn.
Thank you for reading and sharing Signs and Numbers. Until next post…
